“There’s one more house to look at.” The rain has now turned to ice pellets. Soft dings hitting the windshield. It’s a good thing I saved my house for last because I don’t feel safe driving in this weather.

“Sounds good,” Bianca says through a yawn. I know she has to be exhausted. She’s still usually up right now, but that’s because she doesn’t give herself time to take a break from life. She keeps going and going, and one day there won’t be anything left of her but a shell. I’m determined to keep that from happening.

The lights in our front yard are lit up, and we’re definitely different than any of the other houses on our street. Bianca sits up and stares out the window in awe. “This is amazing.”

I know it is, I’m the one who put the whole thing up. Everyone’s favorite pumpkin king is adorned in a red coat with his trusty ghost dog by his side. White icicle lights frame the roof, and a stick Christmas tree starts completely dark before lighting up into an ugly, but cute, tree. Why these characters you ask? Because I know how much Bianca loves them. Even though Mom asked me to do this, I also did it for Bianca. Mom was completely down with my plan once I explained it all.

“I wonder how hard this was to put together,” she says to know one in particular.

“Harder than you might imagine.”

She whips around until she’s facing me. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, it took some skillful planning and busting my ass to get this set up.”

Her eyebrows furrow in confusion, and I can see her trying to piece the puzzle together.

“Surprise, this is my house.” I wave my hands in the air as the big “ta-da.”

Her gasp is all I hear before she slaps my shoulder.
